Dear APU Members,

RE: APU CALENDAR 2023-2024 SEASON

Our sport is finally getting back to normal, so we will now start to look ahead to how we can plan event with a standardised plan. What this means is, developing a national competition calendar for APU, so lifters can compete along the competition progression.

To do this, we need to break up the events into age groups and event seasons.

  • CLASSIC OPEN POWERLIFTING SEASON
The highest level event is the IPF CLASSIC OPEN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS which are held in June each year.

Selection for the 2023 IPF CLASSIC OPEN WORLDS (June 2023), will be made from the 2022 APU NATIONAL CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIPS (Gold Coast).

The transition period will be after this.

The next CLASSIC OPEN State Championships will be held in Oct/Nov 2023.

It is a qualifying event for the 2024 National Championships to be held in Feb (2024)

The 2024 National Championships will be the selection event for the 2024 IPF CLASSIC OPEN WORLDS (June 2024)

  • CLASSIC Jr/Sub Jrs POWERLIFTING SEASON

RE. AMENDMENT TO EXEMPTION RULE - EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

Please see below amendment to Competition progression and team selection.

Discussion on this topic was very broad. However the consensus and majority support was that participation was required at local level for athletes who competed domestically.

This supports factors including maximising our anti-doping efforts as much as we can.

Clause 6.1 iv. Conflicting/Clashing Championships will provide athletes who are participating at IPF events between the Nationals and the following states to use their total achieved at the IPF event to qualify for State Championships.

AMENDMENT:

Part 1 amendment (clause 6 page 18)

6. Exemptions

An exemption allows an athlete to bypass an event and not lose any momentum in the expected competition progression required for athletes.

Athletes who achieve 1st, 2nd or 3rd place at the National Championships shall be granted an exemption to participate at local championships to qualify for State Championships in the same event the achieved 1st, 2nd or 3rd place at the Nationals in the following season.

In other instances, Aan athlete who wishes to progress to a higher-level championship but cannot compete in any lower-level events available to them due to extenuating circumstances (see below), the board will consider and at its own discretion, accept or reject an application for acceptance to progress to the following level.

Each exemption shall be considered on its own empirical support based on the following considered reasons for exemption.

Part 2 amendment (same clause page 20):

iv. Conflicting/Clashing Championships

Conflicting/Clashing championships which are caused from non-patterned events such as International, Commonwealth Championships or Asian Championships, may be reason for exemption.

Condition of exemption for Conflicting/Clashing Championship

a. The actual entry into the higher-level championship is provided and accepted by the APU

b. No more than 8 weeks is given between competitions.

c. The result achieved at the Conflicting/Clashing competition shall be used to progress and are equal to or higher than the required grading for the progressing Championship.
