Important update for APU Lifters regarding Competition Progression and Team Selection Process

22nd May 2022

Dear APU Lifters,

Effective immediately

Regulation change:

Australia Team Selection for regional, and international event:

APU will select its national teams based off the totals of all APU national results aligning with the regional or international event.

The selection will be made from all age category events of the same classification events, e.g. Classic Powerlifting, Equipped Powerlifting, Classic Bench Press or Equipped Bench Press. The teams will be selected from eligible participants who are positioned to represent Australia at the highest level.

This change will affect Clause 1.4 and 4.4 (v) of the APU Competition Progression and Team Selection.

No changes have been made to Clause 4.4 (i), (ii), (iii), (iv), (vi) and (vii) of the APU Competition Progression and Team Selection Process.

Reason

The current policy does not encourage athletes to compete in National Open Championships if they intend to participate in International or Regional Specific Age Division Events.

This is because of the current “1st place with a qualifying total in the aligning event” will be guaranteed the primary selection into international teams. A lifter totals higher but not in the age category event will be overlooked in primary selections due to this current policy.

Benefits

The benefit here is that Masters, Juniors and Sub Junior athletes may fill spots in international open championship events if they have totalled the qualifying amount. And high achieving and high reaching masters/juniors and sub jr who compete in open championships can then travel to IPF masters events.

It is a slight change, that we do not believe will affect many at all, but may increase two things, participation at Open Nationals and Open Worlds.

Please note:

Intention to participate should be made to the APU Team Manager prior to the National Championship. The application should be submitted at least 14 days before the IPF event Preliminary Nomination closing date to the APU Team Manager.

Change to be made:

Clause 1.4 (Competition Progression and Team Selection)

Any athlete wishing to be eligible to be part of the Australian Team and participate in IPF World, Regional or Commonwealth Championship must:

i. Achieved a qualifying total and place 1st at the National Championships in any age category National events of the same classification (eg Classic Powerlifting, Equipped Powerlifting, Classic Bench Press or Equipped Bench Press prior to the aligning World, Regional or Commonwealth Championship (some conditions and acceptances apply, for availability).

ii. Be available for Testing under this, or any other National Anti-doping Organization Anti-Doping Policy for at least six (6) months.

Clause 4.4 (v) Competition progression and team selection process

v. The team shall be selected primarily from all the the APU National Championship results in any age category National events of the same classification (eg Classic Powerlifting, Equipped Powerlifting, Classic Bench Press or Equipped Bench Press, however other results may be considered for the benefit of higher participation.
