APU Response to Melbourne Strength Culture Podcast

31st January 2022

Dear members of APU,

The reason for this notice is to ensure that the APU is protected from unnecessary reputational damage. It is not intended to inflict damage to any people or organisations involved, or express any malice. As the Board, it is our responsible to protect the organisation.

The issue:
The championship which was to be held at Melbourne Strength Culture (MSC) was unfortunately cancelled by the MSC club.
We apologise to all members who intended to participate in this event.

We were informed that an explanation from the Melbourne Strength Culture has been presented on a podcast that they have.

We would like to provide some important information that was not mentioned in that podcast, which we believe is important to ensure the public, including APU members, can make a fair judgement of the situation, if they intend to.

APU and MSC both agreed to run the competition under APU sanction and on other conditions such as:
  1. MSC set limitation for participants, which was eventually set at a total of 33 lifters.
  2. MSC set condition of total of 22 of those 33 spots for Melbourne Strength Culture Gym only.
  3. MSC confirmed 11 spots would be 'public'.
  4. The APU Webmaster notified the MSC that the public spots would be posted 'after board approval' – No objections were raised by MSC.

Following board approval for the competition, the webmaster opened the 11 spots (for the public) on the APU website. This became the issue.

APU provided all the conditions requested from MSC. Those conditions were never broken during any period. (e.g.: MSC requested the 11 spots only to go to the public).

We understand that the MSC has views on Powerlifting, including their belief about resources and processes that they believe we lack. APU believes that there may have some been miscommunication, but we believe a discussion may have resolved the issues.

The decision for MSC to un-affiliate is unfortunate and we believe was unnecessary.

We do believe that while we continue to try to improve, we are proud of how well-structured we have become in such a short time.

We wish MSC all the best.

Yours in Strength – APU Board
